Bukayo Saka’s tribute to Freddie Ljungberg following Arsenal exit

Bukayo Saka has paid tribute to outgoing Arsenal coach Freddie Ljungberg who has announced he will leave the Emirates.

The Swede was part of the coaching staff in north London and briefly held the reigns earlier this season.

He has been credited with influencing Arsenal’s current crop of youngsters, some of whom have flourished in recent months.

Saka has been one of those to benefit from Ljungberg’s efforts and has thanked him as he departs.

He said: “Freddie has given us all so much valuable advice and support. He’s a fantastic coach and someone we all look up to.

Bukayo Saka worked under Freddie Ljungberg

“I’m just so grateful that I’ve been able to work alongside and learn directly from someone like him at this early part of my career.”

Ljungberg was in charge for six games but won just the once – a 3-1 success at West Ham – with three draws and two losses.

Mikel Arteta was appointed as Arsenal’s permanent boss in December and has already delivered the FA Cup.

The Swede is now looking to pursue a career as a No 1 having had a taste for it at the Emirates.

He explained: “I have decided to leave my first-team assistant coaching role at  Arsenal to progress my management experience.

“I have been involved with this club on and off since 1998 and am grateful for all the opportunities they have given me both as a player and as a coach.

“I wish Mikel and all the team every success for the season ahead. Thanks also to the fans for their constant support and for always being by my side. I hope we will all meet again soon.”

Gunners technical director Edu thanked Ljungberg for his loyalty but understands the motives behind his decision.

“We’re really sad to see Freddie leave as we know how much he loves Arsenal.

“However, we know he has had various opportunities over the last 12 months and stuck to the job at Arsenal. Now he has the opportunity to consider other options, and it makes sense for his career at this time.
