Dayot Upamecano’s previous comments on Man Utd as Red Devils line up transfer move

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to rule out a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in the near future.

And judging by the player’s past comments, he would certainly be interested in a “dream” transfer to the Red Devils.

Upamecano and his Leipzig side take on United in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, and all eyes will be on the 22-year-old in what could well be an audition for a switch to the Premier League.

The French international has been strongly linked with the likes of United and Arsenal in the past as a result of his superb performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League over the last few seasons.

And speaking ahead of Wednesday’s showdown, Solskjaer couldn’t hide his admiration for Upamecano.

“There’s always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United,” Solskjaer said.

“I’ve always tried to respect they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player we are linked to.

“But since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.”

The respect certainly appears to be mutual, and in an interview with Telefoot back in 2018, when he was first being linked with a move to one of the elite European clubs, Upamecano named United among three clubs he saw as the most tempting to join.

“As a youngster, you dream of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, but to get there, you have to work,” Upamecano said.

“I’m very proud of myself, very happy. I have to keep going in the same direction. I have to aim higher. My preference for the moment is Leipzig. Afterwards, we’ll see.”

It remains to be seen if United make a move

Now that two years have passed, Upamecano’s mind may well be looking towards a move, and with United said to be looking for a new centre-back they may well make a swoop.

He is unlikely to come cheap, however, and is thought to be valued at around £40m by his club.

But a good performance at Old Trafford on Wednesday could just tempt United with a big-money move.
