De Blasio to Furlough City Hall Workers, Including Himself
Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York said 495 City Hall employees would have to take one-week furloughs between October and March because of a revenue shortfall caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
As of Oct. 1, every mayor’s office employee will be taking a furlough. And that obviously includes myself. This is something I want to be clear about: Everyone will be taking a week’s furlough. This is a step you never want to see for good hardworking people. The folks who work here throughout this crisis, they have not been working 35 or 40-hour weeks. They’ve been working 80-hour weeks, 90-hour weeks, a 100-hour weeks because they believe in this city, and they’ve been fighting for all of you. So it is with pain that I say they and their families will lose a week’s pay. Now we’ll keep fighting for those bigger changes. And I want to ask every New Yorker to join in that fight — pushing your federal representatives to help us get that stimulus, pushing your representatives in Albany for that long-term borrowing. We need to find bigger solutions. But this is another step today to find every answer we can, right here, within the city government.
