Arsenal technical director Edu found himself namechecking three of the young Gunners players that Ian Wright is pinning his hopes on as he discussed what he sees as a “beautiful future” at the Emirates Stadium.
With the Gunners struggling down in 15th place in the table, and having lost their last four Premier League home games, fans are looking to Mikel Arteta to shake things up and give some of his younger talents more game-time.
Gunners legend Wright is one of those fans, and he claimed that the weekend loss to Burnleyshould mean that it is “over” for the likes of Granit Xhaka, Willian and Alexandre Lacazette as first-choice picks in the Spaniard’s team.
Wright added that he’d like to see younger players in their place.
“There are players now that should be getting a blast at it now,” he told Premier League Productions.
“Throw in Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe coming back on-loan and doing well at Huddersfield last season. Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
“You need to do something different because if it carries on like this and he continues to have faith in these players, and they are not delivering, then I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”
Edu remains supportive of Arteta due to what he sees as a positive future at the club, and in naming some of the young talents at Arsenal he reeled off three of the players Wright is pinning his hopes on.
“If you see how many young players get a chance – Joe Willock got a place, Emile Smith Rowe is starting to be on the bench, Ainsley Maitland-Niles is starting to be in the international team and Bukayo [Saka] has been unbelievable,” said Edu.
“There is a lot of them, and don’t forget, Kieran Tierney is young, Gabriel is young, Gabriel Martinelli is young.
“We have a quite interesting future in the club when you are taking about these players – we have a beautiful future.”
