Emma Thompson, Opal Tometi, Gael García Bernal share hopeful ‘message from the future’

In times like these, it can be difficult to imagine a future where our current crises are a thing of the past. But a new animated short film imagines a world where we’ve moved forward and built a better, more equitable world for ourselves.

Message from the Future II: The Years of Repair pictures a future world where we’re on the other side of our current crises and living in a better society that we’ve built for ourselves. The film tackles the issues at the centre of our lives right now, including COVID-19, systemic racism, climate change, the economic crisis, and the U.S. presidential election.

Produced by The Leap and The Intercept, the film boasts a high-profile cast of narrators including Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi, actor and writer Emma Thompson, actor Gael García Bernal, and Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey.

“The pandemic has reminded us — for better and for worse — that we are all interconnected. And the uprisings against systemic racism have shown that there is power in the streets,“ said Tometi in a statement. “It is clearer than ever before what is essential in our society, and whose lives must no longer be treated as expendable. This film envisions a way to build a better world out of overlapping crises, one in which no one is sacrificed and everyone is essential.”

The Years of Repair is the sequel to the 2019 Emmy-nominated Message from the Future with U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The film has been released in five languages including English, Arabic, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
