Frank Lampard facing Chelsea headache as Edouard Mendy suffers injury on international duty

Frank Lampard could be forced to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga to Chelsea’s starting line-up after Edouard Mendy suffered an injury on international duty with Senegal.

Mendy has started two games since his £20million transfer from Rennes, replacing the Spaniard as Chelsea’s new No 1.

The 28-year-old kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace, but could be set for a spell on the sidelines, after being sent home from Senegal’s camp.

The Senegalese Football Association confirmed Mendy had suffered a thigh injury in preparation for their friendly with Morocco on Friday night.

After being taken for scans in Rabat, he has now been sent back to Cobham where he will be assessed by Chelsea doctors.

Chelsea face Southampton on October 17, before two crucial looking games against Sevilla in the Champions League and then Manchester United in the Premier League.

Kepa could be drafted back into the starting XI, although he had lost his place to Willy Caballero before Mendy’s debut.

The 25-year-old impressed during Spain’s 0-0 draw with Portugal on Wednesday, but faces a fight to regain his place at Stamford Bridge.

Following his clean sheet for Spain, Kepa said: “I’ve felt confidence, at ease [with the national side].

“I think it was a good game and I’m happy with the confidence of the coach.

“When I’m needed to help on the pitch, I try to do the best possible.

“It was a game of great intensity. [We had] more control in the first half.

“In the second, we found it more difficult to control Portugal’s transitions. It was a good test.

“We have to be happy. We stood up today.
