Game-changing economy seat has padded wings you can lean on for sleeping

Economy seats in planes don’t always make for the most comfortable of journeys, especially if you’re flying long-haul and trying to get some sleep.

The window seat comes with the bonus of something to lean on, but for most people it’s either a travel pillow, makeshift pillows with jumpers and scarves, or nodding off only for your body to jerk away as your head slumps.

But a new economy plane seat design could be a game-changer.

That’s because the Interspace seat, designed by New Territory’s company Universal Movement, comes with padded wings on either side.

Basically, you can fold them out and then voila – you instantly have a cushion to lean on for a kip.

It can also offer up some privacy in a cramped Economy cabin, as you can fold out the wings and make your own little bay.

Oh, and as the wings are available on both sides, if you’re with a fellow passenger you could in theory fold one out each side to make a bay for two.

Don’t want to use the wings? You can simply fold them back into the chair’s upholstery.

The padded wings fold out from the seat back, which means passengers can rotate and lean on the cushioned surface for that extra level of comfort.

Universal Movement looked to develop a new way of providing a comfy seat for passengers, claiming that traditional designs often focus on seat pitch (the space between your seat and the one in front of it).

However when you’re trying to get some sleep, extra leg room can be great but isn’t always the solution – and New Territory says that the found what people really wanted was the ability to rotate and shift their weight in their seat for extra comfort.

The Interspace seat design

Luke Miles, Founder & Chief Creative Officer at New Territory commented: “Universal Movement and Interspace have been borne from the fact that not enough time, thought and resources have been invested into the back of the aircraft cabin.

“We believe that comfort, good posture and wellbeing is a human right irrespective of financial status or social class.

“If you consider the psychology of the cabin, its linear, grid-like form is restrictive and as a result, seats have been designed for what is essentially an unnatural posture and seating position.

“The time has come to seek designs, products and services which tackle this subject head on, creating affordable solutions for those businesses who share the same values and desires.

“For this reason, we wanted to break the mould with this first product, which is the first of many to come from Universal Movement.”
