Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has admitted there were serious discussions over a potential move to Arsenal during the summer before the transfer window closed earlier this month.
The Italian international has been an important part of the Chelsea first-team ever since he signed from Napoli in 2018, but there were rumours that he would be allowed to move on ahead of the new season.
The Gunners were one of the teams who were most strongly linked with the player, but ultimately nothing materialised.
And Blues fans will be breathing a sigh of relief given that Jorginho has scored three goals and created one assist already in the current campaign.
Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Jorginho explained how close he came to making a move to north London.
“I believe that every player is open to negotiations,” he said. “So I believe there was something they talked about. And in the end it was decided that I remain here.
“Now my head is here and we’re going to do a great job with Chelsea, which I always wanted to do.”
Jorginho seems highly satisfied with Chelsea’s transfer business over the summer, but has called for patience as the new boys continue to settle in.
“They had a big market,” he added on his side. “The players who arrived have great potential and can certainly help this club a lot.
“They’re already doing and will do much more. When there’s this high competition among the players, it turns out that the level of the team goes up, and when the level of the team goes up, the team ends up becoming better and even more competitive to reach the top.
“So I believe that the arrival of these great players only brings good things and will certainly help the group and the club.
“It’s normal that you need time. How long did Liverpool work to win something? ‘
“So I believe that every change, every beginning of a project, we need to believe in the project for it to bear fruit and bring results. So it’s normal that you need this working time.”
