Alan Shearer has backed Jurgen Klopp to strengthen his title-winning Liverpool squad with a “big hitter” this summer.
City’s loss at Stamford Bridge left Liverpool with an unassailable 23-point lead with seven fixtures to spare.
This season’s runaway title success comes a year after Klopp guided the Reds to Champions League glory.
And, while Shearer has hailed Klopp for building a title-winning team, the Premier League hero reckons the Reds boss could do with strengthening his defence when the transfer window reopens.
Writing in his column for The Sun, he said: “For next season, I think Liverpool need only a small turnover of squad players to keep things fresh, keep the squad hungry.
“Not one of the first-choice starting XI were born when they last won the title 30 years ago so it’s not an ageing squad.
“I could see them bring one big hitter in, which will push those already there even further. But when you look at the team; the keeper, top class. The full backs, heaped with praise.
“They could add a centre-back alongside Virgil Van Dijk but Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have done well.
“Then you look at midfield and frontline and whoever they go out and buy, are they going to improve this team that much?
“Boss Klopp now has the job of getting them ready for the next challenges.”
Meanwhile, Manchester City will form a guard of honour for new champions Liverpool when the sides meet on Thursday.
Liverpool took the Premier League crown City have worn for the last two years when they ended their own 30-year quest for a league title this week.
When football resumed after lockdown earlier this month, the Reds’ upcoming trip to the Etihad Stadium had been earmarked as the potentially decisive game in the title race.
But City’s loss at Chelsea last Thursday put the Merseysiders mathematically out of reach and Guardiola feels it would be sporting to pay tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s men.
“Of course we are going to do it,” said Pep Guardiola. “We are going to do the guard of honour of course.
“Always we receive Liverpool when they come to our house in an incredible way. They cannot complain and of course we are going to do it because they deserve it.”
