Liverpool confirm why they didn’t strengthen two key areas in summer transfer window

Liverpool No2 Pep Ljinders has explained why the Premier League champions did not strengthen in two key areas in the summer transfer window.

The Reds made it clear they would not be making any mega-money signings this summer, with Jurgen Klopp the club could not “behave like Chelsea“.

And Liverpool’s transfer approach has been relatively low-key compared to that of their rivals.

Chelsea have splashed around £250million on the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell, while Manchester United have spent the summer chasing £108m man Jadon Sancho – so far in vain.

In contrast, Liverpool have spent £27m to sign Thiago Alcantara, who can add competition to a midfield featuring Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho.

Diogo Jota has been Liverpool’s most expensive signing of the summer at £40m

Other than that, the Reds have signed a backup left-back in Kostas Tsimikas for £11.75m, and brought in £40m man Diogo Jota as support for their feared front three.

While Andy Robertson now has a specialist undestudy in Tsimikas, assistant manager Ljinders says Liverpool took the decision not to look for right-back cover due to the rise to prominence of Neco Williams.

Williams will have the chance to follow the trail blazed by Trent-Alexander Arnold, who graduated from Liverpool’s academy to become arguably the world’s best attacking right-back.

And it’s the same on the right of midfield, where Curtis Jones will be given a chance to make his mark on the Premier League title-winning squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (right) is an example of what Liverpool’s homegrown players can aspire to achieve

“Nobody thought Trent Alexander-Arnold would have been in this position three or four years ago, as the most talented player in English football as a right defender,” said Ljinders in quotes reported by the Liverpool Echo.

“But we trust the young players in good periods and bad periods – we know exactly what we can expect from every single one of them.

“In the difficult times we show faith and give chances again and that’s what happens when you commit to our team and our staff.

“We won’t give up on players easily but the most important thing is to create space in the squad.

Neco Williams could be involved on Thursday night when Liverpool face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup

“Instead of buying a second right defender, it’s Neco Williams. Instead of buying a new right midfielder, it’s Curtis Jones.

“If you are in the squad you’ll get game time and develop.”

Williams and Jones, both 19, have already had an impact this season.

Jones scored twice in last week’s 7-2 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, and also came off the bench as Liverpool began their Premier League title defence with victory over Leeds.

Liverpool got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds.

In terms of transfers the Reds have completed the signing of Thiago Alcantara and Wolves’ Diogo Jota has arrived too, in a shock deal worth a potential £45million.

Youngster Ki-Jana Hoever is set to head to Wolves in a £10million deal, while Gini Wijnaldum continues to be linked with Barcelona. There’s a lot to keep track of.

The easiest way to keep up with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool? It’s by signing up. Put your email at the top of this article or follow the instructions on this link.

And Williams started in both the win over Lincoln and last month’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

Both could be involved again as Liverpool face the Gunners for a third time this season on Thursday for a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

With the Reds embarking on a silverware quest on four fronts, Williams and Jones will certainly get plenty more opportunities.
