Red Bull Salzburg face an anxious wait over the fitness of teenage sensation Erling Haaland, who is a doubt for their crunch Champions League showdown with Liverpool .
The Austrian outfit head to Anfield this Wednesday for the European encounter but may be forced to make do without their 19-year-old superstar.
Haaland has scored a sensational 17 goals in 12 appearances so far this season and netted a hat-trick in their Champions League opener against Genk.
But illness meant he sat out his side’s routine win over Austria Wien on Saturday, although Salzburg remain hopeful he’ll recover in time for the midweek clash.
“The next two days are important. He is checked by a doctor every day,’ Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund told Viasat after the game.
“He’s sick, and we don’t quite know when he will be back. Hopefully over the next few days.”
The news is no doubt huge news for Liverpool, who will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at Napoli last time out.
Haaland is attracting interest from across Europe after his stunning hat-trick in his side’s 6-2 Champions League thrashing of Genk.
Both Manchester clubs are believed to be monitoring the 19-year-old while reports in Italy claim Serie A champions Juventus are also keen.
Norwegian Haaland scored nine goals in one game against Honduras at the Under 20 World Cup earlier this year.
He has already bagged four trebles this season including against Wolfsberger and Hartberg in the Austrian league, and against Parndorf in the domestic cup.
Haaland’s tally stands at 17 goals in 10 club fixtures this season.
