Liverpool’s Neco Williams explains brutal England snub after netting first Wales goal

Neco Williams has admitted playing for England never even entered his thinking as he ignored calls from the FA to stick with Wales.

The Liverpool full-back’s sharp rise to stardom was rewarded with a senior international call-up for Wales’ Nations League fixtures this month.

After making his debut away in Finland last week, Williams followed that up by scoring his first ever goal for his country with the winner against Bulgaria on Sunday.

Williams came off the bench after 65 minutes before heading home Jonny Williams’ cross in injury time to seal the victory.

He is now in line to feature in next month’s friendly against England, but the young defender claims he was never interested in representing the Three Lions.

“England were trying ring my agent a lot and wanting to speak to me. But I weren’t have any of it,” he said.

“My family are Welsh, I am Welsh and my friends are Welsh. For me it was always going to be Wales.

“England will be a great game and the quality we have in this squad we are going to prove to them we are capable of beating them.

“All the boys are excited and can’t wait for the game.”

The 19-year-old would have been eligible to play for England through his grandparents, but it is no real surprise he has opted for Wales.

He represented Wales at under-19 level and has a clearer path ahead of him into the starting XI, with England possessing a wealth of right-back options including Williams’ Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Williams’ goal made it two wins from two for Wales in the Nations League and boss Ryan Giggs feels his side can build on the results ahead of the England showdown.

“We have a lot of quality,” Giggs said. “England have shown their quality but we are getting there as well.

“We will go into every game thinking we have a chance.”
