Man Utd suffer Victor Lindelof injury blow as Sweden boss details extent of back problem

Manchester United have been dealt a fresh blow with Victor Lindelof having suffered a recurring back injury during the international break.

Lindelof is a doubt for United’s Premier League clash against West Brom on Saturday after playing through the pain during Sweden’ Nations League matches against France and Croatia.

His setback gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer something of a defensive injury crisis for the visit of the Baggies to Old Trafford, with fellow centre-back Eric Bailly doubtful and left-back Luke Shaw ruled out.

Lindelof asked to be taken off during the second half of Sweden’s 4-2 defeat to France on Tuesday, having suffered back pain after playing the full 90 minutes against Croatia on Saturday.

Sweden assistant manager Peter Wettergren said the centre-back had been determined to play against France despite his injury.

“Lindelof was in a bit of pain after the match against Croatia, but said that he will give everything for the team,” said Wettergren in quotes reported by Aftonbladet.

“He gave me a signal at half time that he would not go the whole [of second] half. Then I told him to shout when it is not possible.

“He was able to train okay and said ‘I’ll push as long as possible’.

Lindelof’s injury worry has given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a mini injury crisis in defence

With regular left-back Shaw sidelined by a thigh injury, summer signing Alex Telles could make his Premier League debut against West Brom after being given the all-clear following a positive coronavirus test.

And if Lindelof doesn’t recover in time, his injury could hand Axel Tuanzebe another chance to impress.

The 23-year-old excelled in United’s win over Paris-Saint Germain last month, but was hauled off at half-time during the defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir with Solskjaer changing his side’s shape after they conceded two early goals.

Tuanzebe also replaced Shaw when the left-back went off injured during United’s 3-1 win at Everton in their last outing before the international break.

Forwards Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford are all racing to recover from injuries suffered before or during the international break – which could mean a first United start on Saturday for former PSG striker Edinson Cavani.
