Man Utd transfer roundup: N’Golo Kante enquiry as legend makes Upamecano plea

Manchester United supporters are demanding more signings, with Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek the only arrival at Old Trafford so far this transfer window.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is a long-term target for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but a move to United does not currently look close, with the Bundesliga club demanding £108million for the England international.

United fans would love to see a new centre-back pitch up at the club, too.

And with rivals Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur splashing the cash, United need to catch up and bring in fresh faces if they want to finish in the top four this season.

With that in mind, here is the latest Manchester United transfer round-up.

United keen to sign Argentine prospect

Alex Luna is also on the radar of Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris-Saint Germain

United have entered the race to sign Argentine wonderkid Alex Luna.

The 16-year-old, who plays for Atletico Rafaela, is wanted by a host of European giants – including Barcelona and Paris-Saint Germain.

United, alongside AC Milan, have made contact with Luna’s club with a view to bringing him to Manchester in two years’ time.

Luna scored 16 goals before the coronavirus pandemic brought the season to an end in Argentina.

The forward is due to join Rafaela’s senior team in Argentina’s second tier next season.

Solskjaer not keen to reinforce defence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended under-fire Victor Lindelof

Questions have been asked about United’s defensive partnership of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof – but it looks as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out bolstering his backline during the transfer window.

Speaking after United’s 3-2 win against Brighton on Saturday, the manager said: “For me, we’ve got enough good centre-backs here at the moment.

“When you concede chances and concede goals, there are two different things you can look at – it’s either the team shape, or are there any individual mistakes.

“We’re not in our best shape of form, our shape isn’t there, we’re not sharp enough to stop crosses or follow the runs.

“We’re a little bit behind, that’s more structural mistakes than individual mistakes. I thought Victor did well today.”

Ferdinand’s Upamecano plea to Solskjaer

Rio Ferdinand has urged United to sign Dayot Upamecano

Despite Solskjaer’s reluctance to splash out on a new centre-half, his former team-mate Rio Ferdinand has advised him to pick Dayot Upamecano over Kalidou Koulibaly if he does delve into the transfer market.

Napoli defender Koulibaly has been linked with a move to United, but Ferdinand thinks RB Leipzig centre-back Upamecano would be a better option.

Ferdinand told talkSPORT: “Upamecano is young, good on the ball, athletic, strong, mobile, plays every game. He’s one you can see coming in right now.

“[Kalidou] Koulibaly has been spoken about for two or three years, he might have missed the boat due to his age. There’s no resale value.

“Upamecano is the one who jumps out to me, when I watched the Champions League last year, he was the one who stood out to me.”

United make surprise Kante enquiry

United have joined the race for Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante

Manchester United are looking to plot their path back to the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already brought in Donny van de Beek but Jadon Sancho remains Manchester United’s number one target.

Manchester United have made a surprise enquiry for Chelsea’s World Cup-winning midfielder N’Golo Kante.

The 29-year-old is also attracting interest from Inter Milan, managed by former Stamford Bridge manager Antonio Conte, with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard apparently prepared to offload him during the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a long-term admirer of the French World Cup winner and believes the former Leicester City man would be a superb addition at Old Trafford.

Contact has been made with Kante’s advisors, but any deal is dependent on him taking a big cut on his £300,000-a-week wages.
