Naby Keita has handed Jurgen Klopp a huge boost by returning to training following injury as Leighton Clarkson got a run out with the big boys on Friday.
Guinea international Keita hasn’t featured in a competitive game for the Reds in nearly five months after suffering an injury in the 3-0 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in May.
Keita featured in Liverpool’s Community Shield penalty shoot out defeat by Manchester City before the Premier League campaign got underway.
But he pulled up with a muscle injury around the hip area during an open training session at Vodafone Park in Istanbul during pre-season training, and has missed all five of Liverpool’s opening fixtures.
Keita was back in training on Friday following a successful training regime specially designed to step up his recovery during the international break.
And will give Klopp more options as the Reds compete on four fronts.
“Naby Keita is back in training with the team. Today is first time with the team. Alisson is making big progress. He had a proper session yesterday with John Achterberg,” said Klopp.
“Not in team training yet and we take it day by day. We will see, it is too early to say. The medical department will tell me.”
Meanwhile talented youngster Clarkson has previously trained with the Liverpool first team, but he was back at Melwood this Friday as Klopp put his squad through their paces.
The midfielder was in action on Tuesday afternoon in Liverpool Under-19s’ 1-1 draw with Napoli in the UEFA Youth League.
