Napoli chief confirms Sokratis interest as he opens door for Kalidou Kouliably exit

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed the club are working on a deal to sign Sokratis from Arsenal.

The Greek defender has struggled for game time this season following the arrival of Mikel Arteta.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have both been added to the squad in recent weeks which is set to push Sokratis’ further down the pecking order.

A move to the Stadio San Paolo could now be on the card with Napoli’s chief labelling the 32-year-old as an “option”.

According to Il Napoli Online, De Laurentiis said: We are working on signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Arsenal, we consider it an option.”

Napoli are working on a deal for Sokratis

Sokratis has previously played in Italy with Genoa and AC Milan before moving to the Emirates from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.

Napoli’s need to add a central defender may point to the possible exit of Kalidou Kouliably.

The Senegalese star is considered one of the best centre-halves in the world and has been at the Serie A outfit for six years.

But he may be on the move this summer with a host of Europe’s leading lights linked with his services.

Kalidou Koulibaly could leave the Italian club

Napoli have allowed several of their best players seek pastures new in recent times provided they got an appropriate offer.

The likes of Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain have left the club for hefty fees.

And De Laurentiis admits, when asked about the possibility of Kouliably leaving the club, that they will offload players for the right amount.

He said: “When there are important offers, we will sell.”

Both Manchester clubs have been linked with a move for Kouliably this summer.

Nathan Ake has already moved to the Etihad but City are still eyeing defensive reinforcements while United want a partner for Harry Maguire.
