Neco Williams revels in “surreal moment” as Liverpool starlet becomes Wales hero

Liverpool youngster Neco Williams described the feeling after his first international goal as “surreal” after the teenager came off the bench to give Wales a second straight UEFA Nations League victory.

Having made his senior international debut in Thursday’s 1-0 win in Finland, Williams emerged from the bench in the 65th minute of Sunday’s clash with Bulgaria in Cardiff.

A disappointing match had seemingly been heading for a goalless draw until Williams stole on a cross from namesake Jonny Williams to head the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.

The 19-year-old – who made 11 appearances for Liverpool last season including six in the Premier League, securing a title medal – was left somewhat lost for words at full-time.

Williams rose to head home after a cross from namesake and fellow sub Jonny Williams

“I can’t really sum it up at the minute,” he told Sky Sports.

“Before that goal we must have made 25 passes. To finish it off and get my first goal for the country is a proud moment for me, my family and it’s a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

“Making my debut, scoring my first goal for my country. It’s just a surreal moment.

“Hopefully I’ll keep getting chances and hopefully I can get more goals.”

Williams had played on the right on midfield when he came on in Finland, but he scored his goal from his more natural position of right-back after replacing Swansea’s Connor Roberts.

Williams was making just his second international appearance

In the Sky Sports studio, former Wales defender Danny Gabbidon heaped praise on the teenager.

“He’s an outstanding player already,” he said.

“His confidence on the ball, always trying to make something happen, he doesn’t take the easy option.

“What was he even doing up there? He gets in there, tries to affect things.

“Credit to him for being so confident at such a young age, it’s refreshing to see.”
