“Not ashamed!” Kylian Mbappe’s defiant declaration after PSG win over Bayern Munich

Kylian Mbappe insisted Paris Saint-Germain “should not be ashamed” after their win over Bayern Munich.

The French phenom scored twice for Mauricio Pochettino’s men as they claimed a 3-2 win over the Champions League holders in the first leg of their quarter-final showdown.

Mbappe struck after just three minutes to give PSG the lead, before Marquinhos doubled their advantage just before the 30 minute mark.

Bayern fought back to make it 2-2 in the second half, but Mbappe ruthlessly fired home his second after a quick counter-attack to hand Les Parisiens’ victory.

Pochetino’s side spent much of the game in their own half, forced to play on the break against the German giants.

But they handed Hansi Flick his first Champions League defeat as Bayern boss, with the kind of hard-working performance which hasn’t been all that forthcoming in Ligue 1 this season, where they have lost eight games.

Mbappe’s tour de force in the final third took the headlines, but he was quick to pay tribute to his teammates, telling RMC Sport post-game, Mbappe said: “Above all, this is a superb team performance, I was able to profit from everyone else’s work.

“Aside from that, we are only at half-time in this huge clash.”

Asked about his side’s performance and the fact that Bayern managed 31 shots during the game, while PSG had only six – Expected Goals [xG] was weighted in Bayern’s favour too, 3.78 vs 1.34 – Mbappe was defiant.

“We suffered, but we suffered as a team,” he said. “We should not be ashamed of our performance. We were solid, and we knew how to inflict damage in our strong moments. We will attack the 2nd leg with the same determination.

“As I said in Barcelona, I like these type of matches. I was not always smiling, but I am not here to hide, I like to play these type of matches and to be decisive.”

He also spoke of the instructions given to him and Neymar by Pochettino: “The coach wanted me to close the passing lines on Kimmich with Neymar and that I run deep to overcome the Bayern block and make them run because they don’t like that. It worked well today.”
