Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pulls Mason Greenwood up over Man Utd position comments

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told a very modest Mason Greenwood he was being too shy when discussing his preferred position.

The Manchester United forward penned a new long-term deal with the club on Tuesday, tying him down until 2025.

Greenwood is one of the club’s most exciting prospects and already has 21 goals to his name, having featured heavily across the past two seasons.

Speaking ahead of the club’s Europa League fixture against Real Sociedad, Greenwood, who is often deployed on the right flank, was asked where he prefers to play.

“I don’t mind [where I play],” answered Greenwood. “I could play anywhere across the front three. I can play on the right, up front and even sometimes on the left.

“For me, it’s just about adapting into any position I go in. If it’s up front or on the right, I don’t really mind, really. I’ll take it as they come.”

But Solskjaer immediately pulled him up for being too shy. Greenwood has been touted to lead United’s line in the years to come and the United boss said as much.

“Mason was a bit shy there because he can play No.10, as well as a shadow striker,” responded Solskjaer. “He can play right, centre forward, 10 and, at a stretch, maybe on the left.

“We just have to give him time to find his final position.

“He’s a forward who moves really well along the line at the moment at his age and at his development.

“Physically, sometimes you don’t want to be right up in the mix and in the middle with the big brutal centre-backs next to you. So I think we’ve found that he can play both really.”
