Paul Pogba’s advice to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after hearing surprise Man Utd stat

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has joked that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should bench him after a surprising statistic was brought to his attention.

When Pogba has been named in the starting line-up, United pick up an average of 1.9 points per game, but when he is on the bench, that increases to 2.2 points per game.

When he was informed of this statistic by French TV channel Canal+, Pogba joked: “So you have to put me on the bench then!

“I had not seen this statistic. If the team does better without me, I would totally understand that the coach would put me on the bench.

“It’s a good challenge for me anyway. I hope it turns to the other side. I hope people will win more with me than without me.”

Pogba has recently been playing on the left of a front three, rather than as a central midfielder and he impressed in that role in the 6-2 win over Roma in the Europa League on Thursday.

Speaking after that game, United legend Paul Scholes said he felt that was Pogba’s most effective position.

“I thought Pogba was outstanding tonight,” Scholes told BT Sport. “From that position it’s a position where you can create, score goals.

“This position is perfect when you want to be a bit of a maverick. Have a free role in your team, you can do it from that side. The right-back will be tasked with dealing with him but once he steps inside the right-back can’t go with him.

“Some of the quality he shows was brilliant. He was overdue a goal and let’s hope he can go on a run now.”

Solskjaer also said he felt Pogba is “very good” in the role, telling BT Sport: “We know we’ve got creative players.

“I know we’ve got players who create big moments and chances. It’s about getting them up there in positions. Paul, I think is very good in that position [on the left-wing]. You’ve got the foundation behind him [with Fred and Scott McTominay].

“Marcus [Rashford], Edi [Cavani], Bruno [Fernandes], Paul… against any players they will create chances, so it’s about taking them. That’s the difference today; we took most of our chances.”
