Pep Guardiola told his “boring style” is to blame for Champions League failures

Pep Guardiola has failed to add to his two Champions League wins because of his “boring tiki-taka” style – according to ex-Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath.

Guardiola has not won the Champions League as a manager since 2011, the second of his two managerial triumphs in the competition with Barcelona.

Magath claimed Lionel Messi was the key to those two Champions League wins and said Guardiola has effectively been ‘found out’ in Europe without the Barca superstar.

Guardiola has not made a European final since 2011, failing at both at Bayern and Manchester City in Europe, despite winning five league titles and eight other trophies at both clubs.

But that is not enough for Magath, who said: “Messi won the titles, not Guardiola.

“Without Messi, this system has never worked as successfully for Guardiola, otherwise he would have won the Champions League with Bayern or Manchester City long ago.

“Tiki-taka only works if you have players who are technically superior to their opponents. For the spectator, holding the ball, as I call it, is just boring and a top team doesn’t really need it.

”In my opinion, Guardiola generally too often gets lost in trying to win a game in advance. That tactic often ends in wrong decisions, which prevent success.”

After losing 3-1 to Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, City have made an inconsistent start to this season.

City won 2-1 at Wolves, before slumping to a 5-2 defeat at home to Leicester, which was followed by a 1-1 draw at Leeds.

Guardiola’s contract with City runs out at the end of this season, with the 49-year-old yet to sign a new deal.
