Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on what has impressed him most about Thomas Partey

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has pinpointed exactly why Thomas Partey is going to be a “very important” player for Arsenal.

The Gunners prised Partey from Atletico Madrid on Deadline Day after meeting the midfielder’s £45million release clause.

The north London club had been heavily linked with the Ghanaian throughout the transfer window as manager Mikel Arteta aimed to bolster his midfield.

Partey came off the bench in last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City before impressing in his full debut in the 2-1 win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday.

And Aubameyang was keen to highlight the 27-year-old’s qualities after his man-of-the-match display in the Europa League.

Partey shone on his full debut as Arsenal came from behind to win in Austria

“He is so strong physically but yet so good on the ball as well,” Aubameyang told Arsenal’s official matchday programme for the clash with Leicester on Sunday evening.

“We didn’t really have a profile like this in our squad before. In terms of ball progression, beating the press, going forward, he will be very important for us.”

Aubameyang also believes Partey’s presence at the training ground will help Arsenal’s starlets reach their potential.

The Gunners captain wrote: “Thomas has been great since joining the club. He has integrated so well in the squad.

“He is kind, calm and smiley. On the pitch, we have already seen what he will bring us in matches.”

Aubameyang added: “My family is from Gabon but I also have some roots in Ghana where Thomas is from so we are family too!

“It is good for some of our younger players to have a player of his calibre at training. They will learn a lot from him.”

Partey is expected to keep his place in the starting XI for the visit of Leicester, but manager Mikel Arteta is expected to be without five players due to injury.
