Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sends classy Mkhitaryan message after Arsenal end contract

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sent a heartfelt message to Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the midfielder secured a permanent transfer from Arsenal to Roma.

Mkhitaryan spent most of last season on loan with the Serie A club, impressing with nine goals and five assists from 22 league games.

Arsenal had hoped to sell the Armenia midfielder to Roma for around £10m, but their hopes were dashed by the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis on the Italian club.

Instead they agreed to terminated Mkhitaryan’s contract so he could join the Giallorossi without the Gunners needing to subsidise his salary.

Mkhitaryan did not make the impact he might have hoped for at the Emirates – but one thing fans will certainly thank him for is the part he played in helping to lure Aubameyang to the club.

The pair were pals at Borussia Dortmund, and Mkhitaryan appeared in a welcome video following for Aubameyang following the striker’s £57m arrival in 2018.

While Aubameyang looks set to be staying at Arsenal with the club hopeful of tying him down to a new deal, Mkhitaryan was saying his goodbyes on Monday.

The 31-year-old took to Instagram to thank team-mates, club staff and fans for their support during his time with the Gunners, as well as Arsene Wenger who signed him in 2018.

And Aubameyang replied with a classy message, writing: “Wish you the best mon frero [my brother]” before adding “felicitations” – meaning ‘congratulations’.

A statement from Arsenal on the midfielder’s departure read: “Everyone at Arsenal thanks Micki for his contribution to the club and wishes him all the best for his future with Roma.”

Mkhitaryan moved to Arsenal from Manchester United in January 2018 as part of the swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez head to to Old Trafford. He played 59 times for the Gunners, scoring nine goals.
