Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is confident that Edinson Cavani will prove to be a hit at the club, with the Red Devils closing in on the signing of the free agent.
Cavani is expected to fly to Manchester on Sunday to sign a two-year deal worth around £200,000-a-week.
While many supporters are relieved that the club are finally signing a new striker, some are worried the 33-year-old former PSG man could prove to be another expensive flop.
But speaking ahead of Wales’ game against England on Thursday, their manager Giggs stated his belief that Cavani will produce the goods at Old Trafford.
“It goes without saying he’s a world star,” Giggs said. “My second game (as Wales manager) was against Uruguay and Cavani scored and I was really impressed with his work rate and quality.
“It’s about how quickly he beds in. We have seen South Americans who haven’t really come and done it like (Radamel) Falcao, (Angel) Di Maria and (Alexis) Sanchez, but Cavani, with his work rate, you expect him to make it.”
Giggs thinks Cavani will be able to add a different dimension to United’s attack, and does not think he will struggle with the weight of expectations placed on his shoulders.
“I think United needed a centre-forward, and needed that target man to score the goals and make that difference. Hopefully he can do that,” Giggs added.
“I think Cavani will have no problem with the size of the club. He’s got the experience to handle that. But eyes will be on him straight away and if he does come he’ll have to hit the ground running because the pressure will be on.”
Cavani could be officially unveiled by United as early as Sunday evening, and it remains to be seen if they are able to bring any other new signings in before the transfer window closes on Monday night.
