In Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host continued to follow the impeachment inquiry into Trump with a look at the testimony of former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor. He didn’t have to do much to point out the ridiculousness of U.S. politics right now.
Despite Trump’s belligerent assertions to the contrary, Taylor testified that there was indeed a “this” for “that” put forward to Ukraine — the very definition of quid pro quo.
Colbert then read out segments of Taylor’s interview transcript, much of which already sounded like a comedy sketch. Taylor recalled that several government officials tried to organise a meeting with Trump in order to persuade him to release the Ukraine aid. Unfortunately they had trouble lining up their schedules, which wasn’t helped by Trump’s attempt to purchase Greenland at the time.
“Okay. That’s disturbing for a whole different reason,” responded an impeachment investigator, a line that could have come straight from the Late Show‘s writers room.
