Athens, Crete and Corfu have been revealed as the top Greek destinations Brits are searching for when it comes to summer holidays.
In fact, Skyscanner reports that bookings for return flights from the UK to Greece have soared by 44% in the last week, when compared to the week before.
The flight bookings website also noted that there are cheap flights to be found, such as a return from £22 in Economy based on a London Gatwick departure. In fact, the company says this makes for an 89% saving on the average price for flights around this time, compared to bookings over the last two years.
Athens has been revealed as Brits’ top destination of choice, with the Greek capital seeing the highest number of searches on Skyscanner since the government said that summer holidays abroad would be on the cards.
As well as being a brilliant city break (find out more in our Athens guide ), the hotspot is also one of the main and easiest transport links from the UK for those hoping to explore mainland Greece, so it’s not surprising to see it feature so highly.
Still, it was the Greek islands which reigned supreme overall in searches for summer holidays. Crete and Corfu took the second and third spots on the podium respectively, while other hotspots such as Santorini and Rhodes have also proven popular with holidaymakers.
Currently Greece is aiming to reopen to foreign tourists from May 14, so it will be on offer to Brits when the UK’s travel restrictions lift.
Visitors will be required to have been vaccinated or to have a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours before travel. Tourists could also be subject to random Covid testing.
Meanwhile, the Greek islands are on a mission to vaccinate their residents ahead of the return of holidaymakers.
Dubbed ‘Operation Freedom’, the programme aims to have fully vaccinated the populations of at least 69 islands by the end of April so that not only will residents feel safe, but holidaymakers can get a confidence boost when booking holidays.
The news comes as the UK government has said summer holidays abroad will be on the cards for Brits, with a traffic light system placing countries on a green, amber or red list that will determine whether you need to self-isolate/quarantine and take further Covid tests when you return to the UK.
All travellers will need to take a pre-departure Covid test before their flight to the UK, regardless of the country they’re travelling from.
The green list is no doubt the most appealing for holidaymakers as it won’t require you to quarantine on return. However, whether Greece features on the list remains to be seen, with the government due to give an update in May on which destinations will be included.
It’s currently still illegal to travel abroad for non-essential reasons such as a holiday. Under England’s lockdown roadmap the earliest foreign travel could resume is May 17.
