British Airways will begin flights to Beijing’s huge new airport later this year

British Airways will begin operating flights to the new Beijing Daxing International Airport later this year.

The airline has announced that it wil be moving its direct flights to and from London Heathrow to the brand new airport as of the 27th October 2019.

There’s no denying that the Beijing Daxing is a pretty impressive offering – designed by the late Zaha Hadid , the airport spans the size of approximately 140 football fields!

In fact, the terminal building alone is 700,000 sq m.

Main construction on the airport was completed earlier this year and now the final touches are being put in place ahead of its grand opening set for September later this year.

British Airways is the first international airline to confirm that it will be moving its operations to Beijing Daxing, which sits approximately 50km from Beijing city centre.

Inside the terminal building

The company says that it hopes the move will strengthen and develop its network through its codeshare agreement with China Southern Airlines, which will also be based at the new airport.

The new route will be operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft in the winter and Boeing 777-300 aircraft in the summer, and will continue as a daily service.

Return fares start from £387 in World Traveller, £758 in World Traveller Plus, £1,899 in Club World and £2,199 in First Class.

You can already book the flights on the British Airways website .

The long-haul flights will include perks such as complimentary food and drink, the latest in-flight entertainment, online check-in and free seat selection 24 hours prior to departure.

It’s estimated that Beijing’s new airport will be hosting 72 million passengers annually by 2025.

However, it’s actually been designed to accommodate nearly 100 million passengers so there is the possibility that it could expand further down the line.

The central body of the airport is where passengers will find heaps of shops and restaurants, as well as the airport security.

Each ‘arm’ of the building will lead out to the boarding gates and eight runways – although when it opens in September only four runways will be in operation.

Noella Ferns, British Airways’ Executive Vice President in Greater China and the Philippines, said: “We are very excited to be moving to Beijing Daxing.

“Not only will the new airport offer our customers flying to and from Beijing a world-class experience, with state-of-the-art facilities including an improved lounge for our Club World and First customers; but it will also support our ambition to increase leisure and business travel between China and the UK.”
