New Zealand’s visa rules are changing for Brits – here’s what you need to know

Brits heading to New Zealand for a holiday will soon need to pay for a visa.

New rules are coming into force from Tuesday 1st October 2019 in New Zealand where, if you are entering the country by air or cruise, you will need to have a valid eTA in order to enter the country.

The good news is that you won’t physically need to head to the embassy as the eTA application can be completed online and should only take you a few minutes.

New Zealand’s authorities have said that the application process will first open in July 2019, so if you already have a holiday booked for October onwards, you will have plenty of time to apply.

If approved, your eTA will be valid for up to two years.

You’ll be required to pay a small fee as part of the application process too; NZD 9 (approx £4.60) for mobile applications and NZD 12 (approx £6.15) for online applications.

It’s worth noting that you will need a passport which is valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure – until now Brits only needed a passport valid for up to one month.

The Foreign Office changed its New Zealand travel advice this week to warn Brits about the impending changes to the process.

The FCO explained: “From 1 October 2019, British nationals travelling by air or cruise and entering New Zealand without a visa (tourists) will need to hold an ETA before travelling to New Zealand. You will be able to apply for an ETA from July 2019.

“An ETA will last up to 2 years and cost NZD 9 for mobile application requests and NZD 12 for web browser requests.

“Holders of valid New Zealand visas (both resident and temporary) will continue to be able to enter New Zealand without an ETA. Any queries about the ETA should be directed to [email protected]

It’s not just Brits who are affected, as the new rules will come into force for citizens of 60 countries.
