Budapest makes for a pretty fascinating city break, thanks to its rich history, cultural hubs and eye-catching landmarks.

Visitors have a plethora of sights to choose from whether you’re looking for a dip in the city’s iconic thermal baths, want to stroll along the Danube Promenade, or step back in time with a trip to Buda Castle.

With so much on offer narrowing it down for a long weekend can feel like a somewhat daunting task, so we’ve done the leg work for you and picked out our favourite attractions not to miss.

1. Széchenyi Thermal Baths

Budapest is famed for its thermal baths, and the Széchenyi Thermal Baths don’t disappoint.

One of the largest bath complexes in Europe, here visitors can enjoy a dip in the outdoor pools with water provided from two thermal springs, while taking in breathtaking views of the city.

2. Buda Castle

While away a few hours exploring the palace complex which served Hungarian kings.

Nowadays the palace houses the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, where you can learn all about Budapest’s fascinating history and local culture.

3. Hungarian Parliament

Even if you’re not interested in politics, the parliament building here is pretty spectacular, standing tall amidst the skyline and drawing in the crowds thanks to the intricate architecture and grandiose feel of the place.

Inside it’s just as opulent with ornate gold decor and red carpets – take one of the guided tours to ensure you don’t miss any of the highlights.

4. Gellert Hill

If you’re looking for a bit of greenery, then take the trek up Gellert Hill where, at the top, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with some seriously spectacular views of the city.

5. Danube Promenade

There’s nothing like a leisurely walk in a city to see the best attractions, and this promenade offers plenty of sightseeing, from the Széchenyi Chain Bridge to the Erzsébet Bridge.

Or of course you could also sign up for a Budapest river cruise to take in the panoramic views from the water itself.

6. Fisherman’s Bastion

Looking like something straight out of a fairytale, this breathtaking tower offers up a terrace with some incredible views of Budapest.

The mixture of neo-Gothic and Romanesque architecture often wows visitors, not to mention it’s right by the Danube and sits on the Castle hill so you’re not far from some of the other major attractions.

 

7. St Stephen’s Basilica

Named after the first King of Hungary, this Roman Catholic basilica is pretty jaw-dropping with its intricate architecture and height, towering above the Budapest skyline.

It’s not just the sheer size and beauty that keep visitors coming back – the basilica is also renowned for hosting some pretty incredible organ concerts.

8. House of Terror

Those fascinated by history and politics won’t be disappointed at this museum, the building of which previously served as a prison.

The exhibits explore the fascist and communist regimes Hungary faced in the 20th century, with memorials to victims and insights into some of the city’s more turbulent historic eras.

9. Ecseri flea market

Whether you’re looking to pick up souvenirs for friends, in search of antiques or simply love hunting for treasures in flea markets, Ecseri won’t disappoint.

Here you’ll find a plethora of stalls selling everything from trinkets and clothes to music records, while the friendly locals are also on hand to provide tips on where to go for the best food nearby.

10. Hungarian State Opera

Considering adding a touch of luxury to one of your nights out in Budapest? Then the opera house should be on your list – think everything from traditional operas to classical music concerts, and even dedicated shows for kids in the afternoon.

Then there’s the opera house itself which is pretty spectacular and well worth a visit if only to take in the striking building and its opulent interiors.
