Big Little Lies is back for a second season, and we can’t wait to see what drama the Monterey Five will be bringing.
In the new series Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern) and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) are all dealing with the ramifications of their actions from last season, and it’s sure to make for some pretty gripping storylines.
We’re also looking forward to being transported back to the breathtaking settings of the Californian landscape where the ladies reside, for plenty of travel inspiration.
But where is Big Little Lies filmed?
The series actually takes place at various locations across California – and now Visit California has unveiled some of the hotspots used in the series…
Unsurprisingly, the main bulk of the show is filmed on location in Monterey County, in spots across Monterey, Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove.
Head to Old Fisherman’s Wharf downtown where you’ll find the family-owned Italian restaurant Paluca Trattoria, which served as the inspiration for Blue Blues, the fictional café where the ladies gather for a coffee and gossip.
Oh and for a fun day out head to Monterey Bay Aquarium where you’ll find heaps of fascinating marine life from quirky creatures to immersive exhibits. No wonder it caught producers’ attention for a backdrop in season two.
Garrapta State Park
Fancy a scenic road trip?
Head down Highway One towards the spectacular Garrapata State Park and Beach.
Fans of the show may recognise the beach where the Monterey Five were seen enjoying a day out on the beach with their kids, intercut with scenes from the Trivia Night.
It’s also here that Jane, Celeste and Madeline go running.
The park offers up some spectacular scenery from steep cliffs, roaring waves and misty shores.
It’s not the only coastal spot which caught producers’ attention – other highlights included Lovers Point Park, Pacific Grove and Del Monte Park in Monterey.
Although the show is set in Monterey, producers headed to nearby Malibu when searching for the spectacular houses which serve as the protagonists’ homes.
Broad Beach Road is home to some of the amazing properties including Madeline and Ed Mackenzie’s home.
The road itself it right by Point Dume and is ideal for surfers, divers and fishermen. In fact in real-life it also serves as a retreat for A-listers.
Pasadena is where you’ll find Jane Chapman’s house and the fictional ‘Monterey based’ cafes.
The area is known as ‘Old Hollywood’ thanks to its grandiose houses and picture-perfect, tree-lined buildings, not to mention it’s right by the breathtaking San Gabriel Mountains.
Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood is home to the iconic ‘under repair’ stairs where Madeline is seen hard at work. Head to the southeast part of the park just north of the Art Centre to see them.
It’s also here where the ‘Trivia Night’ event was held in the final episode of season one.
In Los Angeles, get some R&R at Bonnie’s yoga studio – this is actually a real studio called Liberations Yoga, which appears twice in the show’s first season.
