The Durrells is returning to our screens for its final series on Sunday nights, but it’s not just the gripping plot we’re excited about.
The hit series has long been giving us serious holiday inspiration thanks to its glamorous Corfu filming locations.
It’s an apt destination considering the show is based on Gerald Durrell’s book My Family and Other Animals, inspired by his family’s move from the UK to Corfu in the 1930s.
Of course, Corfu makes for a dream filming destination thanks to its plethora of spectacular backdrops from the olive groves to quaint villages and breathtaking countryside.
The best part is you can visit the actual spots used in the series – and you don’t need to break the bank in the process.
Here we take a look at where The Durrells is filmed, and how you can have your own sun-soaked escape there…
1. Corfu Town
With its cobbled streets and pastel-hued Venetian inspired buildings, it’s no wonder that capital of Corfu served as one of the main filming locations for the series.
The Durrells themselves lived here for a while too, so you can easily follow in their footsteps by whiling away an afternoon exploring the charming town’s boutiques, restaurants and scenery.
The Mitropoleos square in the Old Town is particularly popular for its colourful buildings.
2. Danilia Village
The bulk of filming actually took place in this beautiful village, which was built as a replica of a 1930s Corfiot village – so of course, it couldn’t have been a more ideal setting for production!
The picturesque town served as the backdrop for plenty of the marketplace scenes in previous series, not to mention its two open air village squares, church and taverns have also proven ideal for setting the scene.
The Durrells isn’t Danilia’s only claim to fame – it also served as a filming location in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only which starred Roger Moore.
Danilia is basically a living museum so finding holiday packages there isn’t always easy, but as it’s more of a day out destination, you could opt to stay in the nearby Gouvia resort where you can find plenty of great value deals with firms such as First Choice and Olympic Holidays.
3. The White House
No, we’re not talking about the home of the US president. Instead, we’re talking about the picturesque White House Villa where the real Durrells lived during their time in Corfu.
There’s good news for fans too, as nowadays the villa has been turned into a hotel and restaurant. In fact, you can follow in the famous family’s footsteps and stay there yourself, in the same rooms where Gerald and Lawrence themselves stayed.
The property boasts one double bedroom and three twin bedrooms, as well as a large open plan area with a balcony offering unrivalled views of Kalami Bay.
This is also the only one of the Durrells’ residences which is currently open to the public.
4. Corfu Imperial Luxury Resort
If you’re looking for something extra special and want a luxury break in Corfu, then you might want to take a leaf out of the cast’s book and stay at the glamorous Corfu Imperial Luxury Resort.
With prices starting from £166 a night for a standard room, it won’t come cheap though.
Still, it’s no wonder the cast chose this five-star hotel to be their temporary home.
The luxury resort boasts 300 guestrooms, suites and villas all of which have incredible sea views, as well as seriously glamorous amenities from huge beds to sleek ensuite bathrooms.
Then there are the pools. Every villa has a private fresh water pool, while the property boasts 3 other pool areas, one of which is indoors. Not counting the sun terraces and private beach areas.
As for the food? It’s Greek cuisine at its best, with gourmet local dishes served up for a delectable meal.
We’re daydreaming about a stay there already.
5. Kalami Bay
The White House Villa offers views over Kalami Bay, and if you’re in Corfu it’s well worth adding a visit to this picturesque corner of the island to your itinerary.
This horseshoe-shaped bay is often hailed as one of Corfu’s most beautiful and peaceful beaches, not to mention it’s a stone’s throw from plenty of resorts so if you do want a bit more atmosphere you’re not too far.
It’s worth noting that it’s a pebble beach too, so during peak season it stays relatively quiet as crowds tend to favour the sandy beaches.
Where to find the best deals on Corfu holidays
Because Corfu has long been a favourite with Brits for the summer holidays, you can find some great packages including all-inclusive deals.
Although the island boasts year-round good weather, if you are going to head out the best times are from April to November (the summer months can be quite hot so if you don’t do well in heat you may want to visit during the tail ends of this period).
Airlines which fly from the UK include essyJet. Ryanair, Norwegian, Thomas Cook, all of which tend to be great for cheap flights anyway.
However, there are a few firms which offer particularly tempting holiday packages – check out our top ones below.
Some travel firms are also offering up themed tour packages inspired by the Durrells.
Prestige Holidays has launched an escorted tour of the island of Corfu, accompanied in part by Lee Durrell, Gerald’s wife. The six-day Corfu: Footsteps of the Durrells tour will explore the show’s filming locations, including a trip to the old town, Mouse Island, and other hotspots including the White House.
Departing 29 April and 2 May 2018 the break costs from £1649 per person and includes return flights from London to Corfu, five nights’ B&B accommodation in a four-star hotel, four lunches and four evening meals, all excursions, entrance fees, transportation and guide.
