UK’s first geothermal lido opens and it needs to be on any swimmer’s bucket list

Heading for an outdoor swim in the UK is usually reserved for hot summer days or, the rest of the year, for the braver adventurers.

However, a new £1.8million pool in Cornwall has just changed that.

That’s because the Jubilee Pool in Penzance has opened the UK’s first geothermal lido, where guests can swim in heated sea waters, surrounded by some picturesque sea views – it could easily be a British rival to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon.

The pool reaches temperatures of up to 35C thanks to the 410m-deep geothermal well.

So how does it work? Warm water is extracted from the geothermal well, then the heat is taken out using heat pumps, which then distribute the warmth to the pool, before re-injecting the cooler water back into the ground.

The attraction claims that its ‘combined system’ means the temperature of the pool can be sustained with a low carbon footprint.

The geothermal pool is the result of a £1.8million investment which has also included upgraded changing facilities, a new café and a new community space.

The pool is divided into three sections; there’s the main pool, the geothermal pool, and a beginner’s pool.

The new geothermal lido is the first of its kind in the UK

The main pool has a capacity of up to 600 swimmers, but due to current social distancing guidelines it can hold up to 150 people. Meanwhile, although the geothermal pool can host up to 50 people per session, under social distancing only 15 swimmers can be in its waters at a time.

The new geothermal pool is already open to the public but you will need to pre-book a slot to swim.

You can find out more about the geothermal pool on the Jubilee Pool website.
