Virgil van Dijk forced off injured after Jordan Pickford horror tackle

Virgil van Dijk has been forced off with an injury just 10 minutes into the Merseyside derby after a Jordan Pickford horror tackle.

The Liverpool centre-back made his way into the Everton box to attack a free-kick when he was clattered by Pickford.

VAR took a look at the challenge as Van Dijk received treatment, and England international keeper Pickford was very lucky to get away with not being shown a red card.

Holland defender Van Dijk played on for a few minutes but it wasn’t long before he gestured to the bench and was forced to make way.

The Liverpool centre-back was replaced by Joe Gomez, who was named on the bench on Saturday, with Joel Matip making the starting XI.

The injury will come as yet another blow for Klopp who is currently without keeper Alisson and midfielder Naby Keita.

Liverpool have also had to make do without Sadio Mane and new signing from Bayern Munich Thiago Alcantara in recent weeks, with the pair out with coronavirus.

Mane showed no sign of being off the pace when he returned to the starting XI at Goodison Park on Saturday though.

The forward opened the scoring for the Reds in just the third minute.

But Liverpool’s lead was short lived when Everton equalised on the 20-minute mark through Michael Keane, who powered a header past Adrian.
