Virgin Galactic reveals super-jet that can fly to New York from London in 90 minutes

Virgin Galactic has revealed the first images for an incredible super-jet that could whisk travellers from London to Sydney in just five hours.

The aircraft – which would travel at three times the speed of sound – could fly to New York in only 90 minutes.

Up to 19 passengers could travel on the high-tech plane, which is set to be developed in collaboration with Rolls Royce.

The firm previously built engines for Concorde, the only civil-certified supersonic aircraft.

Up to 19 passengers will be able to fit on the aircraft

The incredible jet will able be take off and land like any other passenger plane at existing airports, and is set to shorten popular long-haul commerical routes – for customers who can afford it.

George Whitesides, Virgin Galactic’s chief space officer, said: “We are pleased to collaborate with the innovative team at Rolls-Royce as we strive to develop sustainable, cutting-edge propulsion systems for the aircraft.

He added: “We look forward to opening up a new frontier in high-speed travel.”

The business jet will fly at three times the speed of sound

The jet will fly at at an altitude above 60,000ft and hit a top speed of 2,300mph (3,700kph), according to a new design unveiled yesterday.

Now the space firm will look at what materials are suitable to use, and how to ensure the private jet stays cool as it flies supersonically.

In a statement, Sir Richard Branson’s firm said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rolls-Royce to design the craft’s engines.

It has also previously worked with NASA on the concept, after previously signing a Space Act Agreement to collaborate on high speed technologies.

The incredible jet will be designed for its customers needs, with custom Business or First Class seating arrangements.

Tom Bell, Rolls-Royce North America chairman, said: “Rolls-Royce brings a unique history in high-speed propulsion, going back to Concorde, and offers world-class technical capabilities to develop and field the advanced propulsion systems needed to power commercially available high-Mach travel.”

Pricing for seats have not been revealed, but Virgin Galatic is selling spots on its inaugural flights on its tourist spaceplane for a minimum of $250,000 apiece.

This will see customers board a spaceship for a 90-minute round trip with just a few minutes in low-orbit.

But the aviation firm has said it will release more tickets for flights into space as demand spikes.

Stephen Attenborough, Virgin Galactic’s commercial director, said in February: “We have been greatly encouraged by the ongoing and increasing demand seen from around the world for personal spaceflight.”
