Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side scraped through 5-3 on penalties against League One Rochdale in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
That slender shootout win did little to distract United from their disappointing 2-0 away defeat to West Ham in their last league game.
Eighth-placed United sit four positions below Arsenal in the Premier League but a win over their old adversaries on Monday night would put them level on points with the Gunners.
As for Arsenal, they were in cruise control in their Carabao Cup tie, beating Nottingham Forest 5-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night.
A brace from Gabriel Martinelli, and a goal each from Rob Holding, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson saw them set up a tie away at Liverpool in the next round.
The Forest win came just two days after Arsenal’s 3-2 dramatic league victory over Aston Villa in which the Gunners twice recovered from a goal down to snatch all three points.
