Netflix ‘s Ratched has finally hit our screens, and it’s already a firm favourite for autumn.
The show stars Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched, more famously known as the cruel nurse in One Flew Over a Cuckoo’s Nest. The series offers an origin story revealing what transforms Mildred into the terrifying villain from the 1975 hit film.
The show is filled with heaps of drama, gore and twists, but it’s also been giving TV fans major wanderlust thanks to the dramatic landscapes that form the backdrop to the show.
So, where exactly was Ratched filmed?
The series was produced in California , with locations used across Los Angeles , Santa Monica and Monterey .
Some filming also took place at the 20th Century Fox Studios , while Cannery Row provided a backdrop for some scenes set in the local town.
As for the Lucia State Hospital where Nurse Ratched works? It’s not actually a real place. Instead, the King Gillette Ranch just outside of Calabasas was used for exterior shots.
The ranch already boasts some filming credentials, having served as the ranch for the TV series The Biggest Loser.
Meanwhile, the motel where Mildred stays is actually a real place. On the show it’s known as the Sealight Inn, but in real life it’s the Lucia Lodge , located on the Big Sur coast. (We’re also loving how apt the name is).
Oh and yes – it does offer those incredible lodges with direct views over the nearby cliffs and ocean. Bliss.
Speaking of those ocean views, Mildred gets to go on some pretty scenic drives throughout the show. Think long winding roads, towering cliffs, lush greenery and unrivalled ocean views.
Well, there’s good news for those who’ve been getting road trip envy, as all of these are real locations, not just a green screen in a studio.
For example Bixby Bridge makes an appearance in one of the scenes, while the Big Sur Highway also features regularly. (This isn’t surprising when you consider that it has a reputation for being one of the most scenic driving routes in the USA).
