Why Liverpool are keeping a very close eye on Ronald Koeman’s plans for Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool will be keeping a very close eye on what Ronald Koeman has planned for Philippe Coutinho, because they’re in line to make some cash.

Back in 2018 Barcelona paid Liverpool £106million up front for the Brazilian, including a further £36m in installments to get the deal over the line.

The Anfield giants have received the vast majority of this bonus money, but are still owed €5m (£4.4m) from the sale of Coutinho.

There was speculation that Barcelona may have to pay up if Coutinho won the Champions League with Bayern Munich, but this is not the case.

But Barcelona may have to part with the money next season, depending on what new boss Koeman has planned for Coutinho.

Coutinho has made 75 appearances for Barcelona since 2018, and will trigger the £4.4m payout if he makes plays another 15 matches.

Should Barcelona decide to sell or loan Coutinho back out this summer then Liverpool will not make any more money from the sale.

It’s not clear what Koeman has planned for the Brazilian, who netted twice as Bayern Munich battered Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League last week.

Koeman told Mundo Deportivo: “He’s a great player and I think he could be very useful to Barca. After all, it will depend on the circumstances of the transfer and his arrival.

“But he’s a great player with a lot of qualities, without any doubt.”

Coutinho is also keeping his cards close to his chest in regards to what his future holds.

A number of clubs are keen on snapping up the 28-year-old but he is merely focusing on winning the Champions League with Bayern this season.

“My mind is fully focused on the competition,” said Coutinho, when asked to discuss his future. “It’s a unique opportunity for us. I’m very happy to be in the Champions League final.

“On my future, I haven’t thought about it because I’m only thinking about the final.”

He added: “We haven’t spoken yet because of the match. I’m sure he is focused on his team and me on mine.

“PSG is a very strong side with really quick forwards. I don’t even need to say how great of a player Neymar is because the whole world knows it.

“They also have a solid defence. It’ll be a great match, a great final.”

Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian recently revealed that the midfielder is keen on returning to the Premier League.

The Brazilian played his best football at Liverpool, and has attracted attention from Arsenal – the team Joorabchian supports – in recent months.

“Of course the Premier League is something that he has always enjoyed playing in, loved playing in and would love to come back and play in,” said Joorabchian.

Liverpool could make even more money from the sale of Coutinho

“Everything is a possibility I think. The situation is what is going to be the financial conditions of all the clubs including Barcelona and all the Premier League clubs.

“What is going to be the situation in terms of who can actually afford to take new transfers in and how those transfers occur. Every club will have a different position.

“I also think we as a society and in the football world have to be very conscious that the numbers cannot become crazy going forward.”
