Young Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher is ‘ready’ to make his debut in tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with MK Dons.
That’s the verdict of coach Pep Lijnders, who said the 20-year-old has “a calmness about him” that belies his young age.
Liverpool fans will no doubt be keen to see Kelleher in action, especially with Alisson still sidelined.
Alisson, who was named the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year this week , hasn’t featured for the Reds since picking up a calf injury in their opening Premier League game of the season against Norwich City in August, although Jurgen Klopp last week claimed he is closing in on a return to full fitness.
Summer signing Adrian has impressed in his absence, but Reds fans will be eager to see what Liverpool have as back-up in the highly-rated Keller.
Asked by The Athletic reporter James Pearce whether Keller was ready for his debut, Lijnders replied: “He’s ready for it for sure. There’s a calmness about him and he’s a talented goalkeeper.”
As well as Kelleher, striker Rhian Brewster plus defender Ki Jana Hoever and midfielder Curtis Jones are all set to start tonight.
Lijnders believes Brewster is set for stardom , saying: “He has goals in him, he has technique, is good physically, he is a complete striker, and a typical number nine.
“He can score goals, can score with his head, can turn in the box, can play one on one, can score a scruffy goal as well…unbelievable shot.
“And a good boy too, otherwise he would not be in our team. Good character yeah.”
Meanwhile, Alisson could return to action for the Reds after the next international break after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp last week said he was “making big progress”.
